What Even is the FLAMES Game Anyway?

If you were a kid in the 90s or early 2000s, you absolutely know what this is. FLAMES wasn't just a game; it was basically a playground survival tool. It stands for Friends, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemies, and Siblings. Back before smartphones and dating apps were a thing, this was how we figured out if our crushes were actually "the one."

Sure, it means absolutely nothing scientifically, but let's be honestβ€”we all took it way too seriously. We built this digital version so you don't have to keep wasting notebook paper. It does the exact same math we used to do by hand, just way faster (and with fun animations).

How We Used to Play It (The Old School Way)

In case you forgot the rules, the math was actually super simple. You'd grab a pen and write your name next to your crush's name on a piece of paper. Then the ruthless part: crossing out every single letter you both share.

If both names have an "A", boom, cross them out. Once all the matching letters are gone, you count up whatever letters survived the massacre. That final number is your magical "countdown" number. Finally, you write out "F-L-A-M-E-S" and count through the letters until you hit your magic number, crossing out whichever letter you land on. Keep going until only one letter is left. Honestly, it was a lot of work just to find out you were "Siblings."

Let's Look at an Example

You: ROMEO

Them: JULIET

  1. You and Juliet both share an 'E' and an 'O'. Cross 'em out.
  2. What's left? R-M and J-U-L-I-T.
  3. Count them up: 2 letters plus 5 letters equals 7.
  4. Count through F-L-A-M-E-S to 7. F(1)-L(2)-A(3)-M(4)-E(5)-S(6)-F(7). F gets knocked out.
  5. Keep counting the rest until you get your final answer!

What the Letters Actually Mean

🀝 F - Friends

The ultimate friendzone. At least you guys are solid buddies, right? This means you've got a great platonic connection.

❀️ L - Love

Jackpot. This is what everyone secretly counted the letters hoping to get. Real romantic sparks are flying here.

πŸ₯° A - Affection

A sweet little crush. It's not fully "Love" yet, but there's definitely that butterfly feeling involved.

πŸ’ M - Marriage

Start picking out ring designs because you guys are soulmates. It means a long-term, super stable commitment.

πŸ‘Ώ E - Enemies

Yikes. If you got this with your crush, it was devastating. Basically, your personalities probably clash big time.

πŸ‘« S - Siblings

Ouch. You aren't just friendzoned, you're family-zoned. It's a very protective bond, but absolutely zero romance.

Is This Stuff Actually Real?

Look, let's keep it 100% real: No. Not even close. It's an algorithm based entirely on the alphabet. It doesn't know anything about your personality, your zodiac sign, or whether your crush is actually a decent person.

Whether the screen flashes "Marriage" or "Enemies," just remember it's supposed to be a joke! A real relationship is about actually talking to the person, not crossing out letters in their name. Treat it as a fun conversation starter, screenshot it to send to your friends for a laugh, and don't stress over it.

The Nostalgia Factor

Before Instagram or TikTok existed, this game was everywhere in the 80s and 90s. Nobody really knows who invented itβ€”it was just one of those weird schoolyard things that spread entirely by word of mouth from older kids to younger kids.

We built this digital version because we missed that feeling. There's just something incredibly satisfying about waiting to see what letter the algorithm lands on. It's a tiny slice of childhood that we wanted to bring back for everyone to enjoy on their phones. Plus, let's be real, you're definitely going to try typing your favorite celebrity's name in there just to see what happens. We all do it.

❓ Random Questions We Get Asked

Does changing the order of the names change the result? β–Ό

Nope! Because you add the remaining letters from both names together, it doesn't matter who goes first. Romeo + Juliet returns the exact same number as Juliet + Romeo.

What if I got "Enemies" but I really like them? β–Ό

Easy fix. Just try using their nickname instead, or throw in their middle initial. Changing the spelling even slightly changes the entire math equation, so you can usually brute-force a "Marriage" result if you try hard enough. (We won't tell!).

Are you guys saving the names I enter? β–Ό

No way. The entire calculator runs completely inside your browser locally. We don't have a database, and we couldn't see your crushes even if we wanted to. Your secrets are safe.

What if our names have absolutely no matching letters? β–Ό

Then you just add up the total characters in both names combined and use that as your counting number! It's rare, but it happens.

Disclaimer: Just a reminder that FLAMES is purely a made-up game from the 90s. Don't base your real life on it, okay?
